Admitting We are Wrong
Posted On: 01/26/2008 07:28:38

Being able to be wrong

We had to compete with everyone, sometimes subtly, sometimes less subtly. We always had to be right, to be wrong seemed unbearable. We could never seem to bring ourselves to say simply, "I was wrong." We were afraid of what would happen to us if we did. Our egos were very fragile; we were never as strong as we had led ourselves to believe.

We came to discover, however, that real strength comes from being able to be wrong and from being willing to change our ways of thinking and living.

Can I face being wrong and learn from it?

Higher Power, help me realize each day that it is okay to be wrong, that real communication with other people depends on my being willing to see other points of view, and that being teachable is a divine quality.

I too struggle with this, everything is a competition and of course I am always right :) Day by day I am getting better. Thank you for the reminder to keep at it

This one has always been a double edged sword for me. Not only do I dislake being wrong - but I also have to remember that being RIGHT is not always a good thing.

If by being "right" I harm someone unnecessarily was it really worth being "right"? Now I owe an amend  - not for being right, but for being an obnoxious a**hole about being "right" in the first place. Give me a break...

Black and white? Not a chance, life is nothing but varying shades of gray. Using a little humility up front to lubricate the interactions I have with others permits me to limit the times I have to say I was wrong - in addition to apologizing for being right. A moment of thought forestalls a lifetime of apologies.

Thanks for the reminder,

Dennis
