Prudence
Posted On: 05/09/2008 07:43:15

Howdy all. It's been a bit since I put mental mumblings to paper - had to go out and sharpen the virtual pencils.
At our Wednesday meeting out here one of  the subjects that popped up was "prudence". It was interesting to note the range of personal definitions of the word , much less the context it was used in. It ranged from cowardice to the more appropriate soundness of judgement.
Prudence is a really good word for recovering drunks like me to remember. The Wikipedia gives a rather good definition of it: "...[prudence] is the ability to judge between virtuous and vicious actions, not only in a general sense, but with regard to appropriate actions at a given time and place".
It is the basis for how I must act, or rather interact with my world. When I exercise prudence daily, I look at and weigh the alternatives regarding persons, places and things placed in my path. Then take the ones that are appropriate for His Will in my life. When I don't, the results are usually not pretty.
IMHO, that "Wisdom to know the difference" we all seek in prayer is born of prudence.
Have a good day,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

Prudence is also a boundary issue for a lot of alcoholics (like me). I grow up with no boundaries in my life, except for the ones that would embarrass my parents in their public life, but that is a different subject.  As I got older I could not tell what proper prudence was and with no boundaries in my alcoholic mind, it just elevated to an unmanageable level. My thoughts, sexually, actions and many things were open for anybody to ravage my self-esteem. After becoming sober I set boundaries and have learned prudence in anything I do.  AA gave me a very important tool “control”!  I now think before I speak, I think before I act and now I don’t hurt the people I love.

Ok! I’ am done,  so have fun out there and don’t drink.
