I've never tried Atkins. I have a friend who has gone on and of it several times. She has lost weight (and gained it back when she's off) but it seems a bit complicated for me. (She was always testing her urine for something or other). The other part of my plan is regular exercise, something I struggle with. I'm not big on the gym. I've hurt myself a couple of times, so I'm a little gunshy. It amazes me because when I was younger, I was very active in sports, but as one gets older, and busier, its hard to keep that up. Anyways, these days, I'm trying to get into a walking program, but I'm not consistent at all. It seems the day slips away so quickly, and before I know it I realize I haven't done my walking and its time for bed. Exercise is a definite weakness for me. I include it in my food diary too, but as you can see, I forgot to tell you about it, and that demonstrates how I neglect it. One thing I do know, my daughter got a dog, and she walks him every day, and she has lost 20 pounds! She credits the dog.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your response. It took me awhile to find it as it was filed in my junk. This blogging stuff is new to me. Anyways, smaller portions is an excellent start. I'm also using a food diary, where I write down everything I eat and the portions as well as my emotional state. It helps me keep track of foods and behaviors that may be triggers to a binge. I am sensitive to refined sugar, so I am trying to eliminate it, as well as refined white flour. The food diary has been an eye opener for me because I often eat without thinking about it. I just stuff the stuff in quickly; grab a snack when I'm in the kitchen doing dishes for example, or when I'm having a cup of coffee, I find I need something to wash down. Needless to say, I am drinking less coffee and tea.I just keep the diary in my journal where I am writing down my step work.

Hi Steve,
I am new to myRecovery too, but not new to the 12 Steps. I attended OA meetings, CODA meetings, Adult Child of Alcoholic meetings, and 12 Step meetings for several years in the past. However, I have been in relapse for at least 10 years. It's been so long, I can't remember exactly when it all started, but I am working on that. At any rate, I live is South Korea, and don't really have anyone to talk to about this stuff. But I'm working on that too. I can relate to your feelings about few men dealing with weight issues. In all the OA meetings I attended way back when, there were two men who attended. One was a mature man of 60 years or so, also an AA member and one was in his early 30s, and new to the whole process. The AA guy was firm in his recovery from alcohol, as he had several years of sobriety, and food had become a second issue. He was only visiting the town where I lived, but I learned something very valuable from him. Ofcourse, when he attended our meeting, he caused quite a stir, as he was the first male to grace our prescence. He said at his own OA meetings, he was the only male, too, but he didn't let that stop him. Ultimately, the issue is addiction and spiritual in nature. That was his focus. And if God gave him women to share with, then there must be something in that. Overeating is pervasive in human beings. I think women are more inclined to address it mostly because of societal pressures, but men are just as likely to suffer from it. You are a bit of an anomaly it seems, but I think our goal of recovery must come transcend. Perhaps your recovery will encourage more men. Who knows what God's plan is for us? At any rate, I know the 12 Steps work as long as we work them. I'm back, and I hope I have shared something you can use.
