Serenity Now!
Posted On 12/14/2006 18:57:20

Did you ever see that Seinfeld episode where George's father, Frank Costanza, keeps yelling "Serenity Now!" to deal with his stress?  Well, I had a really busy day at work and it was very hectic because I was trying to do my job and coordinate the Holiday Office Party for 470 employees.  As with all big parties we did have one snafu, no forks!  Which was remedied in 10 quick minutes, but it STRESSED ME OUT!  And I found myself practically yelling "Serenity Now!" like old Frank Costanza.

Clearly, that didn't work or do anything to increase my serenity.  What did work was calling a recovery friend who listened, commented and basically reminded me that one can be serene in any circumstance simply by changing their thoughts.  So, I went back to the party, this time thinking of myself as a guest instead of the harried, haggard woman who thought the entire event rested on her shoulders and the happiness of each and every one of the 470 employees was her personal responsiblity.

Needless to say I had a much better time thinking of myself as a guest and I actually enjoyed the event  VERY MUCH.

Serenity is so much more than a word or a prayer that we say so, so often.  It really is a state of mind or a thought process that allows us to connect with out higher power and pass up our will.
