Many of us have pets - mine have helped me in some of my worst times by being there, no matter how bad. Anyone else out there?

Oh yes!  While people may love me, somehow I am able to accept the love of my pets more easily than from any person.  I know that may sound strange, but it's true.  You see with pets there are no strings attached.  They just love you just because they love you.

I know I treat my cats well.  Why else would they all come running when they hear my voice?

Part of my attachment to my pets came from when I was young and had no one else to talk to.  My pets (cats and dogs) were there and were quite content to let me babble on endlessly.  When I was sad they showed compassion.  When I needed love they loved me.

I know I have issues, but in some ways I think I learned a great deal about love from my pets.

I think part of it is the fact that they need us too. Not a feeling of power, but like when our dog comes up to me and wants to play or a cat needs petting - not with anyone else, just me. Their attention is total, they aren't worried about how they look, whats going to happen tomorrow, whether or not the bills are due. They want me right NOW. It is an extrordinary comfort, bar none. IA member in my roving men's AA group that has tarantulas for pets, and derives the same comfort from them. Can one ask for more?

I love my babies.  I have two dogs and 4 cats.  They are so loving and when I get up in the morning they wake up (dogs) tail wagging like they hadn't seen me in days and they slept with me through the night.  They walk with me, comfort me snuggle (cats and dogs) with me when I am lonely and I really feel like animals have such a good sense of humor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - pets are good people!

We even have a lizard (lepoard gecko) named Sally that pays attention when you talk to her. Not exactly the greatest at conversation and can't fetch worth a darn, but is fun to watch... And the cats love to watch her - wonder why?

I've always felt ambiguous about pets because of my mother. She has her share of s**t to figure out, and  she loves animals. The problem is she gets more than she can care for. The cats and the dog are OK, although if she didn't have other people volunteer to walk the dog he would be pretty porky, but she has this fish tank which has always been a source of pain for me. Sometimes the fish are so horribly diseased  it hurts to watch them try to swim, most of the time she doesn't know when she last fed them, ect. Unfortunately, it was just her and I living in the house, and we were both too self absorbed to really take care of it.

Shrinks say that one of the characteristics of addictive personalities is that "anything worth doing is worth overdoing". I altogether too often figure out that "if one is good, more is better". Go figure.

Having a pet IS a large responsibility. I can't toss them out like an old pair of shoes, nor neglect them. They are part of our family.

For myself, the care we give them is returned a hundredfold in unconditional love and just plain pleasure.

No doubt!!!! After my mom passed away I got a little pomeranian puppy. Let me tell you, on those days when I just couldn't  get up and function, once he crawled into my lap, I could instantly feel hope. Also with my father, he had totally given up on life after her death but once he got bonded to our puppy, he is a totally different man full of goals. Good topic :)
