Rehab helped me start getting sober. It wasn't a fix and it was only a beginning. I was given phenobarbitol (sp?) for the alcohol withdrawals. I hated it although it probably helped me get through the first week a bit better. I mean...if they had given me something I liked for the withdrawal it wouldn't have fixed anything really. I am forever grateful for going to rehab and don't know if I could have gotten sober without it. I've had a few friends go the suboxone route. It's good if you don't stay on it for more than a couple days. Where I went to rehab, they wouldn't give you any until you were going through enough withdrawal (usually a day or three after your last opiate). Then they would keep you on it for only 3 days. After that, you got nothing. It really helped the worst part of things. But just like everything you gotta want to get sober or nothing can help.

Rehabs
I believe that rehab can be a good place to start from - but as gavinz says you really have to want it. otherwise go to a detox and start back over again. Ive seen altogether too many youngsters go through because of their parents - most don't even finish the course. The important part for me was (1) the tools I was given, and (2) the knowledge I wasn't alone in this unless I wanted to be. I cannot give an opinion on the use of medications to ease withdrawal. I was already through it when I went in. Ibelieve that they can help ease dangerous symptoms but can and are easily abused, creating another nightmare in itself...

Rehabs
Do you think that rehabs are the best place to start recovery? If so, what are your thoughts on meds? Such as campral for alcohol, suboxone for opiates, etc.

i have mixed feelings about rehabs,i went to one and lasted two months,i went there for alcohol addiction, but i found myself talking about my childhood which wasnt helping me at all in fact it was making me want a drink, but on the other hand its worked for others.its down to the individual.you have to be ready, which i feel i wasnt,
