The cause of alcoholism is not well established. There is growing evidence for genetic and biologic predispositions for this disease, but this research is controversial. Studies examining adopted children have shown that children of alcoholic biological parents have an increased risk of becoming alcoholics. Relatively recent research has implicated a gene (D2 dopamine receptor gene) that, when inherited in a specific form, might increase a person's chance of developing alcoholism. Twice as many men are alcoholics. And 10-23% of alcohol-consuming individuals are considered alcoholics. ------------- Shakira

Shakira - Welcome to our wonderful little band of mischevious miscreants and societal misfits. At least part of the cause is well established. I tested it myself for altogether too many years. Drinking, lots of drinking, plain and simple. It would be really cool if they could test for such vunerabilities when we were young but then I doubt it would reduce the alcoholic population by any serious amount. We, of all people seem to have a predisposition to insolence regarding authority. Like so many of the risk induced/multiplied diseases, people like me have a tendency to discount the warnings - until one day we wake up and find we are in that boat (and it is sinking fast). But then, such is our lot in life. Some of us just needed a little more time to get here than others. Slow learners, I guess... Take care, Dennis

Discovering the cause and discovering the cure are 2 widely different things. i don't even care what caused it for me. i don't believe it's curable, nor have i ever seen any evidence that it is. Thus, i do the best i can to live with it. The best thing i have found that allows me to live and live well: AA Certainly AA has it's critics, but the vast majority of those have never really tried the twelve step program of recovery, which strikes me as "contempt prior to investigation." i noted the link in your writing to some sort of treatment site and even checked it out. Treatment didn't work for me. Why pay for something that more than likely won't work? AA is free and has worked for me for a few years now. Folks clain "they" want to sell books, but i've been given nearly all of mine.... That evidence and experience speaks for itself. e-hug

Don't have to know what caused it. I know I have it, and have learned how to keep it in remission. I do not have a desire to drink. Alcohol impairs even the non-alcoholic, and when judgement is impaired, strange things happen! I have a PHD in drinking- a thorough researcher! luv

Alcoholism is nothing to be shamed of because it is genetic. Forty percent of alcoholism is caused by genetic factors and sixty percent by factors we don't understand. If we take identical twins and split them at birth and raise one in Wyoming and one in Ethiopia, if one twin becomes an alcoholic, there is a 40% chance that the other twin will become an alcoholic. Alcoholism runs in families. If you have an alcohol problem it is very likely that other members of your family are addicted. New York Drug Treatment Centers
