How do I know who is a good sponsor for me? What should I look for in a sponsor. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Tayters,

That is the $64,000 question.

I would look at it this way.  How bad do you want it?

Let me give you a little story.

When I was in my twenties i was going nowhere and nowhere fast.  i worked and I worked hard.  But I just wasn't going anywhere.  I couldn't figure it out.  So I took a real hard look at me.  We all have to do this every once and while to get a grasp of who we are.  Anyways, I figured I needed some discipline.  I needed to grow up.  But how was I going to do this?

I pondered and pondered, whom, what...?  Then it hit me.  I will join the military.  Which I did.  I knew they would give me what I needed at the time.  Housing, food, a job, etc...

My point is that I made a heart felt search with in to determine what it was I needed.

You have the opportunity at this time for a sponsor.  Determine just what kind of person or discipline that you require to help set you in the right direction for your sobriety.

But, at all costs it most be someone that you can share openly with. Someone that you can rely on when the going gets nuts.

Be selective.  Be picky. You are when you choose your clothing.  Your sponsor has to fit for them to work.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing...

Peace,

Greetings Tayters!  Thanks for asking that question, and although only a few in recovery will argue about the need for a sponsor, they are not only life savers but key pieces of your recovery puzzle. I'm certain that I would not be where I am today and would have probably relapsed by now without my sponsor and weekly planned visits, and unplanned ones.  My first response to your question, living in a cold winter place like Minnesota, is to find a sponsor that winters in a warm place so you can visit them! Sort of kidding, but really not since I visited one of mine in Arizona last winter!  But seriously, without sounding too "cryptic" you will know who you will want to ask to be your sponsor. It will just happen, if you are working your program. That's part of the blessing of the 12 Promises of AA and the miracle of recovery. Don't rush it. When the student is ready the Master appears......I just called someone back this morning that last week, at our AA meeting, asked me to be his sponsor. It took me a week to ponder, ask my other sponsee how he felt, and finally call him back and ask him if he can meet for lunch with us this Wednesday. He was excited and thankful. It's beginning anew. I pray the same for you. Step out, when the time is right. Thanks for stepping out to even ask in this site......prodigalreturrned

i had a fear of sponsors and waited to find the perfect one and then "went out" when i got back i had one within a few days but i told him he could be my sponsor under one condition, if i changed my mind and wanted to go with someone else that would be cool...

my point is you can always get a interm sponser until you find what you are looking for, dont wait forever, they really are helpful and working the steps is key to sobriety...in my book

first of all i would pick someone that has worked the twelve steps and is continully working them now
but other than that if your drowning in a pool are you gonna be picky on which hand you grab
