Be kind to your mind.

Meditation has always been thought of as cultish or fanatical.  I, too, shared this belief in the past.  Part of this was the result of misinformation combined with unrealistic expectations.  I personally have not yet been completely entranced visually nor had a dramatic spiritual encounter as is commonly believed.  Yet I have found a peacefulness using techniques involving relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing, and creative visualization.  The art of meditation is individual and unique to each person.  For me, it's the unity of spirit, mind, and body coming together in harmony with its surroundings.

Some techniques of meditation include:

1.  Meditate by just being aware of yourself.
2.  Monitor your thoughts.
3.  Be very aware of your feelings.
4.  Observe yourself.
5.  Be patient and calm.
6.  Quiet your fearful, racing thoughts.
7.  Desire only to be able to live differently.

Meditation can be a invaluable tool and I think, an important role in the recovery process.  I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who has over-expectations for anything but an experience with someone precious and special: yourself.

Thanks for the post, Norm. I like walking meditations the best. I just go for a nice walk along the beach, letting go of all thoughts and just enjoy my surroundings. Or even just a neighborhood walk in the spring and noticing the pretty flowers blooming in peoples yards and totally letting go of any thoughts, just noticing the beauty. Somehow this kind of walking meditation is very calming for myself. Take care. Sincerely, Connie with 12 step love and hugs sent your way

Norm: there are many ways to meditate, including just focusing on your life (your breath) going in and leaving until you mind scramble quiets.

Yah- racing thoughts were a huge deal for this drunk- it took a long time to

empty them out...peace did finally win. But I had to work & work toward it.

letting go-

gardening, walking, art related projects- all help with a meditative state!
