Short Note -- Schooled by a Movie
Posted On 06/22/2007 23:46:42 by cutlip

Just wanted to share something with everyone.  Just got back from watching Evan Almighty -- and I STRONGLY suggest that people check that movie out.

I'm not going to spoil the whole movie for you, but there's a line that absolutely moved me to tears, as it was directly in the line of prayer I've been concentrating on for a month straight now.  At one point in the movie, a conflicted character is having a conversation with God, asking what she should do...  and God slips out this line of wisdom (*I'm paraphrasing, but the meaning is true)

"...when people pray for courage, I don't give them courage, I give them opportunities to BE courageous.  When they ask for strength, I give them opportunities to BE strong."

This thing I'm fighting, God isn't going to take it away.  He's going to continue to give me opportunities to show how serious I am about doing the right thing.  I have the choice to either put down the thing that gets me, or answer my flesh and do what I will.

It's not up to God to heal me, it's up to me to take the opportunities he gives me to become the man he created me to be.

When I heard that quote, I cried.  Glad the theatre was dark.  :)

This film was one that I had not heard a lot of good reports about, then my sponsee who at the time was facing the two year jail sentence he is now serving and not handling it well brought the film round to watch.  The message that he found helpful was that sometimes God does things we don't understand and it is best just to go along even if you are misunderstood because there is always a very good reason.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and it wasn't as cheesy as I thought, and yes, I cried too. Isn't it amazing, when we open ourselves up to God He speaks to us through just about anything.  You are God's very precious son and He wants you to learn.  I remember the days that my sons learned to swim on thier own or ride a bike, pure joy for them because they did it themselves. But just remember He is always there and you can count on Him catching you if you fall while you are learning. Did you get that first step done because if you are thinking about submitting your Higher Power it may be time you were moving on. Cara

Yes, thanks for sharing. From previews of this movie, I thought it might be pretty hokey. But God can move in mysterious ways. Those are indeed words worth pondering and puts the responsibility for change with us as well as our leaning upon God, and to me that seems to be the way that it works. Thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing that. That really hit home for me. It really made me think about some things and it helped me understand some situations. Thanks!!!!!!
