July 7: Being Myself
Today I will build on my own strengths; my days of copying are over.
When I try to make myself like other people, it never works. When I give
myself away by trying to be someone who will interest others, I lose my
own center. Other people's authority can be a powerful drug. It's a
great temptation either to placate or to challenge it. Neither need be
done. Being myself is my greatest defense against falling prey either to
the desire to become other people or to take them on in a contest of
wills. Staying with who I am and risking feeling alone will ultimately
be more help to me than trying to align myself with others for my
security.
I can be myself
Never do what a specialist can do better. Discover your own specialty.
Do not despair if your specialty appears to be more delicate, a lesser
thing. Make up in finesse what you lose in force.
