disillusionment
Posted On 01/02/2008 14:23:33 by ben
My sponsor sent me this...talk about changing my perception.
Let me encourage you with one final thought: disillusionment is a good thing. It is grief over the ending of some of our illusions, and isn't a commitment to reality, no matter the cost, what this recovery thing is all about?!? Clarity comes from seeking it.

Boy, can I relate to this one... It took having to get honest with myself (a change of perception if you will) to see things for what it really is. Like Dennis said, it isn't all about me.

Oh so right  - "Life on life's terms" can and does suck - if you let it.

I for one can testify that that the deflation I felt upon finding out I was not in control of anything, much less my own corner of reality (alcohol had the reins on that) was along the line of - "why even bother then?". Terminal giveashititus. That is also when I learned about changing my perception.

I thought I was pretty important. The reality of it is that less than 0.00000000016 percent of the world even knows that I exist, much less gives a rats ass whether I live or die. That shrinks down the part of life that I might have any influence over to a miniscule amount. Then take away the the people I know but can't control. Yeah, I was important all right - to the liquor companies.

Reality for me now is pretty simple. Life happens, I go on.... If I can't change something that bothers me, I either ignore it or I file it away for later. I absolutely refuse to allow anything to take me back to what I was.
